All Is Thriving

Tao Yuanming was a very famous poet in the late Eastern Jin Dynasty(317—420A.D.).He was well⁃known for his idylls. In the 11th month of the first year of Emperor Jin An,Wenxi, when Tao Yuanming was head of Pengze County,he had been in his post for just three months, and it frequently made him sick in the stomach. He didn't appreciate the way other of⁃ficials performed, and he felt ashamed to receive his superiors. He couldn't float with the indecent tide of the society, thinking all the time to quit the post.

One day the weather was very fine, and he made his voyage on a little boat. The copper official seal, which bore authoritative power, was lying peacefully in his study and he didn't take much of his luggage, lightly he came and lightly he went. The boat moved very fast before the wind, and he reached home in half a day before he realized it.

He wrote a poem after he got home, and“Retur⁃ning Home”was its title. In the poem he depicted his love for the people and the nature, showing nostalgia and the pastoral emotions. In the poem he said that he was told, that the farmers were ploughing the present spring season. He went ecstatically with them to the fields, enjoying the thriving scenery of the spring flowers and grass engendered with 10 thousand living things,10 thousand trees are merrily shooting.

Later“All is thriving”became an idiom,it means the grass or the trees are energetically growing. It can also be figuratively used,to denote something is prosperous.
